description: While there's no shortage of heart-stopping, mind-blowing stories from the history of the winter Olympic Games, for U.S. fans nothing compares to the wilder-than-fiction tale spun by the 1980 men's hockey team. The 30th anniversary of that American squad's Feb. 22, 1980 victory over a seemingly indomitable Soviet team sparks memories of so many other staggering Olympic narratives. But honestly -- those other sagas will have to wait, as we start with the greatest upset in Olympic (summer or winter) history. In 1980, the USSR had won gold medals in ice hockey in every Olympics but one since 1956. The U.S. team, on the other hand, was a motley blend of college and amateur players, and was trounced 10-3 by the Soviets in an exhibition game just before the Lake Placid games began. The outlook for the Americans in Lake Placid, in upstate New York, was, at best, bleak. At worst, it might be humiliating.
